Ethics and Investing in the post-Madoff Era: Part of the Women in the Know Series

Wednesday, October 14 2009, 7:30am - 9:30am
The collapse of the financial markets revealed an ugly underside of scams, schemes, and just plain sloppy due diligence that was hidden or overlooked when returns were positive.  Faced by this sobering reality, what are sophisticated investors doing to avoid falling into future traps?  How do you evaluate the potential for fraud or malfeasance in an investment opportunity?  Will increased regulation play an effective role?  Most importantly, are there tools investors can use today to avoid losses tomorrow?  Observations provided by:

Barbara Piette, Managing Principal at Knightsbridge Advisors, a pioneering funds of funds for early stage venture capital. As an investor for over 20 years and a former partner in two leading venture capital firms, she focuses on managers investing in health care, technology and consumer companies.

Laura Roden, Founder & Managing Director of VC Privé LLC, a boutique investment bank which connects individual and institutional investors with high quality VC funds, private equity funds, hedge funds, and other alternative asset funds.  VC Privé screens hundreds of funds each year from around the world to identify top tier management teams and track records.

Alisa Won, Partner at Winston Strawn, a leading international law firm with expertise in structuring complex investment instruments and assisting clients in comprehensive due diligence.

Introduced and moderated by Joy Boatwright, Senior Financial Advisor in the global wealth management division of Merrill Lynch, who founded the seminar series called "Women in the Know: Empowering Women through Knowledge" to help educate women on financial and life issues.
